Work Creatures
For this project I was tasked with creating my own vision of the words “Work Creatures”. There are certain traits that, when they sneak into your work ethics, start to derail you from your goals. These, to me, are true work creatures. Alone, or together, they creep up on you and impact your work in detrimental ways. So what must we do? Find out how to keep those creatures at bay and our work turned in on time.
How the creatures came to be
Initially, upon hearing the words “Work Creatures” for the first time, I was unsure of what route to follow. I began asking friends their initial impression, where a majority said “a creature that helps you work”. This then made me think, what if these creatures do not help you, but hurt you. This caused me to look at the work with a more ‘negative’ approach. Through this, I saw it as an opportunity to release a poster series (with collateral) that focused on keeping students and workers focused and dedicated.
For the creature itself, I was inspired by the mucinex mascot. A creature that was created by the problem that, by any means necessary, wanted the problem to persist for its own livlihood. Taking that logic, and combining it with an anthropomorphic blob, I came up with the creatures I have now.
A complete series
Below is a slideshow showcasing three of the “Work Creatures” I created as part of a series that I could see spanding over 5 characters. Each of them carries specific differentiating colors and objects to showcase how different they truly are from each other.
How far can the creatures go?
These posters were intended to be for the office space, but I was then asked why not go further? What are other ways that we could potentially see our disturbing-yet-cute creatures in our offices? I then felt like there could be a possible way to have people interact with these creatures. I then decided sticky notes and To-Do lists would be great organizational objects that people could use to get rid of these pesky creatures.
Future Vision
There is limitless potential to where “Work Creatures” could go in the future. I envision an app to aid in keeping goals in check and phone utilization down, a calendar with each month highlighting a new gooey friend, and an advertisement playing before YouTube videos. There is room for more “Work Creatures” content and will update as soon as I create them.
